Eilean Glas Lighthouse, this is the site of the oldest lighthouse in the western isles,
"Eilean Glas light was first displayed in 1789. The original tower was replaced in 1824 by Robert Stevenson". Our walking guide told us of the local community's failed efforts to buy the buildings, which they regard as part of their heritage, from a couple who bought them in 1984. The place has fallen into disrepair. Interestingly, this was on Wikipedia/BBC sites "In 2004, the owners the lighthouse building were convicted of theft and of running a fraudulent charity to pay for the mortgage on the property. Their 3 year sentence was later reduced to 2 years at the Court of Appeal. The local community of Scalpay are currently attempting a community buyout". There is still a notice in one of the windows asking you to contribute to their charity to restore the buildings!!
